ICM Partners Signs ‘Tupac’ Helmer John Singleton

by Mike Fleming Jr October 16, 2014 11:00am Client John Singleton signs with ICM ICM Partners has signed writer/director/producer John Singleton.  It comes as he prepares to direct the long gestating Tupac Shakur biopic Tupac. It’s hard to believe that it was 23 years ago that Singleton came right out of USC and changed the business with his breakout Sony hit Boyz N The Hood. The hot button picture established the urban film as a viable genre with an under served audience waiting for good films. It also made Singleton the youngest director and first African American to get an Oscar nom. He flies under the radar, but has helmed hits that include Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Shaft, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Four Brothers; he produced and financed Hustle & Flow, the breakout indie as well as Baby Boy and Black Snake Moan. Singleton was repped by WME. He continues with Underground manager Trevor Engelson and attorney Stephen Barnes.

3:10 PM PST 10/08/2014 by Borys Kit Client Evan Turner sells his first feature, “Partners,” to New Line. New Line has picked up Partners, a spec by former Walden movie executive Evan Turner.During his tenure at Walden, Turner worked on titles ranging from Hoot to the Journey to the Center Earth movies, the latter of which were co-productions with New Line. When Walden contracted and downsized to become mostly a financier several months ago, Turner found himself out of work and looking at his options. In between meetings, Turner hit the keyboard. He worked on an episode of The Goldbergs and tackled his feature script. With a pseudonym on its cover page, Partners was in the process of being packaged when Turner lunched with New Line execs Michael Disco and Sam Brown and told them about a script he happened to “discover.” He couldn’t keep the cat in the bag for too long; before lunch was over, he admitted he wrote it. Still, New Line liked what it saw and took it off the table. Disco and Brown will now oversee the project for the company. USA Network has made decisions on the fate of its freshman drama series, opting to renew Satisfaction, from Universal Cable Prods., and cancel Rush, from Fox 21. Additionally I hear the network is close to giving a third-season order to the Jeff Eastin’s drama Graceland, produced by Fox TV Studios. There is no decision on USA’s first-year comedy Playing House. Created by Sean Jablonski, Satisfaction has received a 10-episod order. It stars Matt Passmore and Stephanie Szostak as a couple with an unconventional marriage. “Satisfaction sparked a cultural conversation about modern love and marriage in today’s world,” said USA Network President Chris McCumber. Satisfaction and Rush got off to a soft start, both opening to 1.7 million total viewers in Live+Same Day as well as a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating (Satisfaction) and 0.4 (Rush) in July. In L+SD, the series, which wrapped their freshman-season runs a couple of weeks ago, have performed similarly, with a slight edge for Rush — Satisfaction averaged 1.4 million viewers and 0.4 in 18-49 and Rush 1.7 million viewers and a 0.4.
